Three Months.

3 months!!!
12 weeks.
Wearing a headband from my sister-in-law's shop,
Queeny Belle Frills.
Peyton is 3 months old!!!! I can hardly believe it. I gave birth to that little cutie 13 weeks ago. She's so big now. She's in 0-3 month clothes! Finally. That happened a couple of weeks ago. The shirt she's wearing in the picture above is newborn, but Target newborn runs a little big. She also finally moved from newborn to size 1 diapers about 3 weeks ago. It just blows my mind how fast she's growing. Which is funny because people told me she's be in size 1 in the first couple of weeks, but it took her 10. I am really grateful that she's going slower than other babies. I'm getting more use out of her clothes, which is nice. At her 2 month appointment (she was 9 weeks), she weight 9lb 5oz & was 21 inches long. I had to take her back a week & a half later & she was 10lb 4oz & 22 inches long. She had a growth spurt in that week & a half, obviously. That has slowed down a lot though. She's gone from eating 6 hours a day to 3-4 hours a day. It's nice. A break for my boobs.

10 weeks.
The girl is getting really strong. The picture to the left is from 10 weeks. She was holding her head really well. Now she's a ton better, as you can see from the top photo in this post of her sitting in the Bumbo today. She LOVES to stand. She can hold almost all of her own weight & we just hold her for balance. She started doing it a few weeks ago. It lets her have better control of what she sees. She's still a cuddly little burrito, but she wants to look at everything. When she's really awake she will just turn her head side to side constantly. She loves to look at lights in particular. I'm almost scared that she's going to stare at the sun & go blind or something. Ha! She stares at the lights in Gabe's hobby room for a long time. My eyes hurt immediately if I look directly at them. They're really bright. But she just loves lights. It's so cute.

Mr. Moo, 13 weeks.

Peyton Loves...

Mr. Moo, her cow.
Making eyes & cooing at my cell phone.
Baths.
Cuddling with mommy.
Being swaddled.
Sucking on her hand.
When daddy makes silly noises.
Ceiling fans.
Lights.
Her bouncer.
Mobiles/hanging toys.
Standing up.

11 weeks.

Peyton hates...

Getting out of the bath.
Tummy time longer than 5 minutes.
Waiting to eat.
Being in her car seat too long.
Silence.

10 weeks.
She's growing too fast. I love where she's at right now though. Looking at everything. Smiling when she sees me. It makes me sad that she won't always be this cuddly little burrito. But I'm definitely excited about what's ahead. I can't wait for her to giggle. She coos a heck of a lot, & little squeals, but no giggle yet. Sitting up on her own, walking, talking... I love watching her grow & see her make milestones, but it makes me sad at the same time. Someday she won't need me! Sad.

This little girl is sleeping SO MUCH BETTER NOW! I don't believe books about sleeping. I think they're crap. I think some people get lucky with their babies, & some people don't. From other reading I've done beyond things like Baby Wise, I've found out that the average baby will start sleeping better around 12 weeks. This was totally true for me. A week ago I started a full on bed time routine, which I think was what helped the most. I now bathe her every night, & then feed her on one side, swaddle her, then feed her on the other. Usually she falls asleep then, but if not, I rock her a bit til she's really drowsy. She usually opens her eyes & wakes up a bit when I put her down, but she goes straight to sleep after that. When she's tired, if she's swallowed & comfortable, she'll sleep. I'm now putting her down 15 minutes earlier every couple of nights. She's down to 930 now. She sleeps until any time between 4 & 6, then wakes up to eat a little, & then goes back to sleep until 730 or 8. I cannot tell you how great it is to sleep longer than 2 hours at a time at night. I'm still completely exhausted, but there's a massive difference. I do my best to nap with her during the day too. She takes 2 40 minute naps usually. I'll usually use one of those to grab a quick sleep with her.

12 weeks.
That's the heart I crocheted.
Not much house work is getting done, which I hate. I vacuum once a week or so, but I really need to do it more than that. & scrub my floors & bathrooms. I guess it'll come with time, being able to do that kind of stuff with her around. I need to figure it out soon though, cause I also need to move things around to start making it baby safe for when she becomes a baby on the go in a few months. Lots to do!

Gabe & I are doing pretty good. We're doing a lot of thinking about what's next for us & where Gabe wants to go with his career. It's all very grown up, talking about that sort of thing. Ha! I am considering going back to school. Key word: considering. I really don't like Wright State. I wouldn't mind doing BYU online. Then we wouldn't have to pay for daycare. I'm also looking in to community colleges. I have so much I want to do with my time, but of course, I don't have that time. My time is no longer my
12 weeks.
She fell asleep like this at church.
own. It's weird. My body wasn't my own for 9 months, & really, it's still not. & now neither is my time. My life revolves completely around Peyton's schedule & all of her needs. It takes some getting used to. Gabe & I have briefly discussed me taking photography classes. I loved that stuff in high school, & I think it'd be really fun to get in to. This past Friday when Peyton went to bed, I had a mild breakdown & Gabe walked me to my drawer of crafty things, got my crochet hooks & some yarn & sat me down in front of pinterest. I spent the next 3 hours learning to crochet. I'm very thankful he got me to do that. I really like to crochet! It's very repetitive & makes me pretty much unable to think about anything else since I have to keep count. I like it. Friday night I just practiced stitches. Saturday I made a little crochet heart, & that night I started a baby turban (it's a hat) for a Peyton. I haven't finished it yet because I haven't had a chance, but I look forward to it. It's nice to sit down & do something I enjoy. I also really want to learn to sew, but that will take more effort & a lot more practice. Crocheting isn't too hard to teach myself. Of course, I'm not trying anything too complicated at this point.

Wow, this is a really long post just to say that my baby is 3 months old. I just can't believe it. The main thing to know is that she's doing really well. & we love her immensely. She's a very very loved little girl.

Here are a few more pictures that I couldn't resist posting.

9 weeks.
10 weeks. Sleeping with attitude.
10 weeks. Matching daddy in support of mommy's school.
12 weeks. Lookin' cheeky.
Gosh I love that girl. & that man. They're great. =]

That is all.

Home is wherever I'm with you.

I completed this little project like a month ago but I've discovered that it's really hard to type while holding a baby, so this is a little late. I was going to do one of these for Christmas, but by the time I got around to it Christmas was over, so I decided to do something non-holiday related. I love the song "Home" by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros (they're also really good live, just fyi), & I thought this would make a cute thing to put on a decoration. Turns out it's a pretty popular quote to use. I see it on pinterest a lot. But if you don't know the song, check it out. It's really good.

So anyway. I've made two of these! The first one I made is not very good. It's on my mantle. But my mom liked it so I made her one as well & I used thinner paint pens & it turned out a lot better. I bought the canvas at Joann's on sale, the spray paint that I used (& by "I used" I mean my husband used)  was found in husband's hobby room, & I bought the paint pens at Home Depot. They're the Sharpie brand. I used some crafty ones from Hobby Lobby on the first one I made, but I like the Sharpie ones a lot more. The paint comes out smoother & it's just an easier paint pen to use.

All I did to make this was spray paint the canvas black (again, husband did it for me because I'm not very good at even coats), & then I freehanded the writing. I had sketched it into a notebook a couple weeks before & then just went with that design. No big deal. Nothing flashy. Vinyl lettering, or whatever that is (I'm not the craftiest of people), would be a heck of a lot easier, but I like that I freehanded it. It never looks the same twice. That & it occupies more of my time, which at this point is good for me. The first picture is what the original looks like on my mantle. There's no close up. The second photo is the one I made for my mom. I took these with my cell camera at night so they're not very good quality photos, but you get the idea.

The first one (not so good) on my mantle.

The second one (better) I made for my mom.

It was a really simple project, & I really like the simplicity of it. I'm no artist, & I'm not much of a homemaker, but I'm pretty proud of this project. Maybe someday I'll become more talented & take on something more intense. But in the meantime I'm just trying to get my baby on a schedule. Priorities.

That is all.

My top products for mom & baby.

I've seen a ton of lists of "necessities for newborns." Since I have a bajillion friends that are pregnant I decided to throw in my two cents. I'm no expert, but there are some things that have just made my life a little easier the last few months. I suppose the only things that are really necessary are a car seat (since you can't bring the baby home without one), & a place for the baby to sleep. & you know, diapers, cause...ew. Those things are obvious. But there are some things that AREN'T necessary that I'm finding that I wouldn't want to live without.

FOR MOM

1. Dermoplast Pain Relieving Spray.

My hospital gave this to me along with the enormous pads, the ice pads, & mesh underwear (sexy). If you are having a vaginal delivery this stuff is your best friend for the next couple of weeks after. I sprayed a bunch down there every time I used the bathroom (which by the way is a tough thing to do right after you have a baby). If your hospital doesn't give you a can of this stuff you're missing out. Bring some with you. It's great. Especially paired with the ice pads. So good when you've just pushed a baby out of you.

2. Boppy (or other breast feeding pillow).

If you're breast feeding, invest in one of these. & bring it to the hospital. I love my Boppy. It makes life so much easier. While it's totally possible to nurse without it, it's a heck of a lot more comfortable to sit there for 45 minutes with the baby resting on a pillow instead of having to support her in that position for that long. It gets tiring.

3. Baby Connect App

OR something like it. It's an app that you can record everything. I have an android phone, but I know itunes has these kinds of apps as well. You can time feedings, left & right, when you change a diaper, how long they sleep, height & weight, etc... It's all in there, & it's so handy to have all of that info in one place.

4. A breast pump.

I didn't originally think I needed a breast pump since I wasn't going to be going back to work or school. But I'm SO GLAD we got one. Baby girl didn't want to eat anything her first week. It was awful. She lost a bunch of weight & there was talk of putting her in the NICU. But also, when my milk came in when she was 3 days old, my boobs were super engorged (plus lumpy & red...almost mastitis) & hurt sooooo bad. If you've never been engorged, it's not fun. Yes, it makes your boobs huge, but they're like rocks that feel like they're going to explode. It's really handy to be able to pump it out. Sometimes when I wake up engorged, I'll feed baby girl but she won't empty me, so I have to pump the rest out or else I'm just engorged all day. Believe me, it's unpleasant. You can get these used if you don't want to invest a couple hundred bucks in a brand new electric one. We bought mine from a friend of my mom's. I just got all new tubing & equipment for it. Really you're just getting the motor thing used.

5. Breast pads.

Trust me. It's really embarrassing to leak through your shirt at church. I forgot them at night once & woke up with milk around my boob area on the sheets.

FOR BABY

1. Noise maker.

There's an app for that! No seriously. Baby Soother. It has a ton of sounds, including white noise. White noise is FANTASTIC! Apparently it's really loud in the womb so the loud fuzz sound calms them. TV static also works, but it's really handy to be able to put your phone in the car seat with it on. (If you want more information on that, look in to Happiest Baby on the Block. We watched the dvd. The method totally works!!!)

2. Head support.

One of those pillow things that curves around their head for the car seat! Baby girl was really tiny so we actually got an entire body support, but took it out when she was about 10 weeks. Now she just has the head support which helps keep her head from dropping off to the side. That really upsets her.

3. Swaddle Me Blankets.

Baby girl loves her Swaddle Me blankets. So do I. While husband & I are excellent swaddlers, she's very wiggly now & manages to get herself out of just a regular blanket. I like the swaddle me blankets cause they're velcro & you can do them up nice & tight. There are also the Halo Sleep Sacks. I've heard great things about those. Anything to help swaddle makes life easier. It calms them. (Again, Happiest Baby on the Block.)

4. Swing/Bouncer.

This is one of those things that I was told was definitely not necessary. Well I'm here to tell you that without a swing or bouncer I wouldn't get ANYTHING done without my baby screaming. We borrowed ours from a friend. The swing is really good at keeping her relaxed & sending her off to sleepy land for nap time. The bouncer/vibrating chair thing is great for when she's wide awake. I can set her up in that, turn on the tv static, & she's happy for at least 20 minutes. It's great! Definitely something I'm glad we have. & if we hadn't borrowed from a friend, it would've been totally worth it to buy the bouncy chair.

5. Front pack/Moby Wrap

If you have a baby that likes to be cuddled, get one. I don't like the Moby wrap. My body is awkward & it doesn't sit right on me. But a friend let us borrow the Baby Bjorn front pack & baby girl loves it. It's hard to carry her around the house all the time, so having her strapped to me makes it easier to accomplish things. Of course, I have to stand funny if I want to see something right in front of me, but it's better than having one hand, or a crying baby that wants to be cuddled.

The only thing I don't use on this list anymore is the Dermoplast, but my baby is 3 months old so I don't need it anymore. I use everything else on a daily basis. It just makes my life a heck of a lot easier!

I hope everything goes smoothly for you if you're having a baby!!! & for anyone else, I hope you're well!

That is all.

Two Months.

2 months.

This is a little overdue, but Peyton was 2 months old on the 25th of January! I can't believe I've been a mom for 2 months. That just blows my mind. I'm not old enough or grown up enough to have a 2 month old. Well...obviously I am, but it's weird. I still can't believe I'm someone's mom. The good news is I've kept her alive for 2 months, so I'm feeling pretty good about it.

5 weeks.

At her 2 month well baby check up she had to get a couple of shots. She handled them like a champ. Cried of course, but wasn't squirmy, just upset. She weighed 9 lbs 5 oz!! At one month she didn't even have a percentile at 6 lbs 14 oz, so our goal was to get her between 5 & 10 by 2 months. Clearly mommy's boob milk is doing it's job cause we surpassed our goal!! She's now 21 inches long, meaning she's grown 2 inches in 2 months. She's in like the 19th percentile for that...something like that. She's a really petite baby. She's now 10 weeks & only JUST moved from newborn to size 1 diapers. She still fits in some newborn clothes, & in smaller 0-3 month ones. I guess we just have a small baby. But she's so cute!!! I just love her.

6 weeks.

All of the hair on top of her head fell out by the time she was 1 month old, as you can see in the photo of her in a hospital gown above (don't worry, she was just there for a test & it turned out fine). She looked like the cutest most feminine little man you ever did see. But it's grown back now.

She had her first "social smile" at 5 weeks. I looove her smiles. Cause even if I'm frustrated with exhaustion, she can flash me a gummy grin & I just melt. Every morning I lay her on my bed to change her diaper & she just stares at the ceiling grinning (which is why I'm convinced babies can see spirits. There's gotta be something there that we can't see cause she just smiles for no reason all the time).

Here's some of what I've learned about our little girl.

7 weeks.
Peyton likes...
being swaddled.
bath time.
the sound of rolling r's, or similar sound with lips. Usually gets her to stop crying.
the car when it's moving.
sucking the life out of mommy's breasts.
being rocked or bounced.
her swing.
when her dad sings like a goof to her.
her vitamin drops.
her diaper to be fresh & clean.
rolling from side to side.
sucking on her fist.
being cuddled.

5 weeks.

Peyton hates...
being put in her carseat
a wet/dirty diaper.
getting out of the bath.
being hot. & she's a heater so that's rough.
having clothes pulled over her head.
the nasal aspirator with an intense passion.
being hungry.
being half asleep & waking up to find I'm not holding her anymore.
tummy time on the floor.

7 weeks with her daddy.
Altogether I suppose things are going pretty well. Could be worse. Gabe is becoming much more comfortable with Peyton now that she's a bit bigger & more responsive. She smiles, she holds her head up, & she likes to try to stand. She can hold the majority of her weight for a few seconds at a time. Strong girl!! So those things make it a little easier for Gabe to bond with her. She's not a very good sleeper yet so I'm having a bit of a rough time. She'll go anywhere from 2-6 hours being her longest stretch of sleep at night. & she doesn't really nap during the day so I don't get to nap. I've got these big old dark circles under my eyes. I take back any complaint about being tired I ever had. NOW I'm tired. I don't know how moms with more kids do anything. I can barely take a shower! Not because I'm tired, but merely because my child is so darn needy! Good thing she's the cutest thing I've ever seen. I'm bias, I know. But you have to admit, I've got a pretty baby. =]

7 weeks.
As for life without the baby... I don't really have one. Gabe does though. I mean, he goes to work. He has some friends that like RC planes. Not as much as Gabe, but no one likes RC planes as much as him. He goes & flies his planes (after asking my permission) & even has some friends that will go with him. He's been really helpful though. He makes dinner most nights because Peyton tends to be a breast feeding machine in the evenings. & then he'll even do the dishes. I figure it's a fair trade since I take care of his kid all day & night. He's lucky to have such a wonderful wife. =] (For the record, I'm also very blessed to have such a wonderful husband.) I AM planning on learning some new skills though. I want to learn to sew still. Pinterest has infected me with that desire. Even the desire to quilt, which I never saw coming. Pinterest has also told me I need to learn to crochet, which I plan on doing soon...assuming I get a chance. We'll see. Peyton is becoming a little easier. I can put her on her play gym & she's distracted for a good 20 minutes, so sometimes I get "me time." I did just complete a project that I sketched out during a brief nap & managed to finish while I was feeding her. I'll post about that soon.

Anyway, I hope everyone is doing well! Stay warm!

100 things I didn't know, or didn't listen to, about pregnancy.

Photo by Rachel Bridgwood of Sweet Root Village
**Here's an updated version of "things I didn't know, or I didn't listen to, about pregnancy." I started this list in June 2012, when I was about 16 weeks pregnant. I had baby girl in November, so now I'm much more knowledgeable on the subject of pregnancy.**

Something I discovered when I was pregnant was that I had NO IDEA what to expect. You can read & read & read, but then you go through it & you're like "wait, what? What's going on with my body?!?" Seriously. All of the sudden you're host to a little alien that's slowly taking over your body & making you gain weight. I realize that people probably mentioned these things, but I just didn't pay attention cause it wasn't important at the time. I mean, there's a LOT of stuff. & I'm really grateful I wrote this while I was pregnant because now I'm 9 weeks postpartum & I forgot half of it!!! I'm sitting here missing being pregnant & I read this & remember how miserable I was. Thank goodness. It's really good to know the truth about pregnancy since no one ever talks about it.

Some of these are pretty personal, but I don't care. Also, keep in mind that this was written for a friend. So I wrote it as if I'm speaking to her. Which means there may or may not be sarcasm included. There probably is. This is also what my experience was. Every pregnancy is different, so my experiences could be totally different from the next person's. & also, since I started this list in June of last year, some of these are written as if I was still pregnant, & others are looking back. I know, confusing. But I didn't feel like going back through the list & rewriting everything. I did reorganize it a little bit though. Some things are repetitive, but that's because I feel they should be beaten in to your head more. =] Enjoy.

THINGS I DIDN'T KNOW, OR I DIDN'T LISTEN TO, ABOUT PREGNANCY.

1. Growing a human is exhausting!

2. You haven't known "tired" until you get pregnant & morning sickness kicks in. Then it's never ending. (I can't imagine doing this with kids... or having multiples. Oh dear.)

3. People will insist on giving you advice... & you'll want to tell them to shove it. Just nod your head & pretend you're listening. Just remember, you're pregnant, so you can walk away whenever you want, even if it's rude! =P (I realize this is kind of advice, but I'm a wonderful, knowledgeable, honest person that gives good advice. =] )

4. If your period was more than a couple of months before you got pregnant you have to have an ultrasound to date the pregnancy. I was given 3 different due dates before I hit 10 weeks.

5. If you get pregnant with an IUD in place, sadly it probably won't be a good pregnancy & it will miscarry.

6. Miscarriages are emotionally hard whether you're 4 weeks or 12 weeks. But it's probably a million times harder when you've had more time to "bond" with the baby inside you.

7. Not having a period is nice, but your body more than makes up for it in other punishments far worse than bleeding for a few days every month.

8. Morning sickness is not exclusive to the morning. ( I did know this. But I had a nice reminder that it can last ALL day.)

9. It is also not exclusive to the first trimester. I was one of the unlucky ones that experienced it the whole pregnancy. Luckily it wasn't every day in the third trimester.

10. You'll want to throw up because it will probably make you feel better. I love throwing up when I'm nauseated...as weird as that sounds. & now when I wake up nauseated, I actually hope for it & look forward to it... that is if my Zofran can't beat it. (Melt on your tongue Zofran is a lifesaver PS.)

11. Prenatal vitamins will probably make you even sicker than you already are. But there is hope! You can switch to a gummy prenatal (which is easier on the belly), or take 2 Flinstones vitamins a day.

12. A lot of women find it best to take their prenatals before bed, or at dinner time because then they end up sleeping through the sickness. That didn't work for me. I always got sick within 12 hours of taking it, & if I was asleep, it would wake me up to barf. At least before I switched to the gummies. Everyone's different I suppose!

13. You'll get good at identifying nausea days as opposed to throw up days. I much prefer throw up days to 24 hour nausea.

14. Eating new, or different things (like Indian) is probably a bad choice cause it may make you sick. I learned the hard way. While on a cruise no less! Which is awful because cruise food is delicious!

15. You'll get sick at the most inopportune times.

16. Even the most menial task, like checking the mail, seems never ending.

17. Hormones screw with absolutely everything!
  • Vision changes. I had no idea the eyes would have problems! My vision was way blurrier & it took extra effort to focus, which caused more headaches, which in turn, made my eyes worse. Vicious circle.
  • Hair growth. It's faster & harder to tame...everywhere.
  • Mood swings. (More on that later.)

18. You may be less than loving during your first trimester. I didn't even want to cuddle.

19. Don't assume it will take months to get pregnant. I was pregnant in less than a week. & I have friends that it's taken over a year for. You never know.

20. You'll look forward to your belly looking like a baby bump cause there's a long in between stage where it just looks like you're gaining weight. Now that I think about it, this may be a reason some girls stop trying to hold in their bellies & they just push it out.

21. You don't have to be big & pregnant for heat to make you miserable. It's a hormone thing. I make Gabe stay way on his side of the bed cause he's a radiator, & I kick off the covers, & I'm still sweating when the AC is set at 68.

22. Just because you peed every half hour before your appointment doesn't mean you'll be able to do it for a sample. Trust me. I once had to drink an entire huge water bottle at the doctor's office & stay extra time so that I could give a urine sample. Drink tons of water beforehand, & hold it. If you have to go as soon as you get there they'll let you pee in the cup first thing.

23. There's extra discharge that comes with pregnancy. Lovely. Keep panty liners around. Just saying.

24. Mood swings are a billion times worse than PMS. It's like PMS on steroids. I can be smiling & within 30 seconds want everyone to jump off a skyscraper.

25. You will cry about stupid things like your dog eating your ice cream (true story) or simply because you realize that you've cried multiple times that day (also done that).

26. There's always at least a small part of you that's afraid something will go wrong & you'll lose the baby.

27. People say not to lay on your stomach, but from my research it's only for comfort reasons. Particularly when your belly gets big. People also say not to lay on your back. My doctor never had a problem with me sleeping on my back. If I got uncomfortable I'd just move. People say it messes with baby's heart rate as well. I don't know if that's the case or not, but again, my doctor didn't have a problem with it & my baby's heart rate was always great.

28. Laying on your belly is a really easy way to feel the baby moving around early on.

29. Invest in pregnancy pillow. You'll be glad you did cause your back starts hurting early. Plus, from some of the reviews I've read, particularly for mine, you can roll it up in an O shape & sleep with your belly in the hole... so you can sleep on your belly if that's how you're most comfortable.

30. You have the chance to do some screenings at 12 weeks or so. I say don't do it. But obviously I'm not your boss. From what I've been told, a lot of women get positive results but a large majority of those turn out to be false positives. Why spend your pregnancy freaking out? There's nothing you can do about it. & I can't speak for everyone, but I know I wouldn't evacuate the pregnancy. I've seen tons of posts in online forums of women freaking out about their scans & blood test results. It's crazy.

31. For some reason women love to tell their delivery horror stories when they talk to you about pregnancy. It's not comforting in the slightest, even if they say something like "I was a rare case," or "it probably won't happen to you." Try to ignore it. I'm lucky to know a few women with good delivery stories so that's nice.

32. I haven't experienced this yet, but apparently strangers will touch your belly without permission. I'm not exactly sure how I would handle this situation. But I like to think that I'll be able to say that I'm not pregnant to at least one of them & freak them out.

33. It's not uncommon for a stuffy nose to kick in during the second trimester (thank you hormones). Happened to me a few weeks ago. You can use a saline nasal spray. That's it.

34. A "bump" appears in your lower abdomen almost overnight. But you'll probably be the only one that notices it.

35. Sucking it in as long as you can makes your muscles tighter. Which means less flab! Which is good. I'm only just starting to have problems sucking it in. But my muscles feel sore at the end of the day as if I've worked them out, which I think is funny.

36. Constipation. Eat lots of fruit & drink lots of water. That's all I'll say about that.

37. Maternity clothes, especially pants, are a billion times more comfortable than regular clothes in my opinion. I practically lived in my maternity leggings & I miss them daily. & they have such cute maternity clothes these days!!!

38. Headaches. Apparently they're not uncommon during pregnancy. Lucky me, since I'm prone to migraines already, I get them nearly everyday now. It is totally safe to take a couple Tylenol. & do it with caffeine cause it makes it work faster. If you're anything like me & that's totally ineffective, ask your OBGYN about a prescription for Fioricet. It never worked for me before, but I guess it's a miracle drug for me during pregnancy.

39. Round ligament pains. Apparently it's from the loosening & stretching of joints & things. I don't care what causes it, all I care about is that it hurts. Now it's generally just a dull ache, but when they first started...my goodness. They were so sharp & came on so fast I would curl up in fetal position & tear up. We thought I might have appendicitis. It was bad. That used to happen 5 or 6 times a day. Now that only happens a few times a week, which isn't bad.

40. Seriously. Mood swings.

41. Going to look at baby things is completely overwhelming. It's a lot to take in. A lot. Brace yourself, take a deep breath, & remember you can handle it. Even if it totally freaks you out, like it did me.

42. If you're anything like me, you'll have an even more intense need for love & understanding from your husband. Especially when you've thrown up 6 times that morning, the trash smells so bad you're having dry heaves, or you need something from the grocery store at 11pm. & definitely when you're having a mental breakdown.

43. Your sense of smell is seriously amplified. (I knew this. But it's totally different when you experience it.)

44. When it's your first, people will constantly ask you how you're feeling. People you don't even think you've met before. They all suddenly know who I am & care about my well-being.

45. You're gonna crave random things especially at times when they're not available to you. There have been multiple occasions that husband has had to run out to get me something.

46. People will tell you that you won't make it past 5 or 6 months wearing high heels to church. Yours truly proved them wrong. I wore 4in. heels to church at 38 weeks. I would've worn them at 39, but I was having the baby at that time. Clearly they don't know that my grandmother is Grandma Crazy Shoes. It's in my blood.

47. You'll be super excited about planning the nursery or baby shower one minute & then flip a switch & suddenly be freaking out about being a mom.

48. If you don't push it out, people will tell you that you don't look 17 weeks pregnant...or however far you are before you really start to show. I get it all the time. I suppose some really do show early, especially women with multiples or who've had babies previously, but I'm willing to bet a lot give up sucking it in, or just push it out. I guess no one really knows what 17 weeks looks like. My sister-in-law still had abs at 16 weeks! I guess everyone is different.

49. Pregnancy brain is real. It's sad how many times I left my keys or my wallet in the house or at Target.

50. Bloating is also very real. My belly was 2 inches bigger at my baby shower than it was the week I gave birth. Bloating.

51. If you're in tune with your body, you can feel the baby moving around in there earlier than people say is possible with your first. Especially if you know what you're looking for. Laying on my back, I could feel it a couple of times a week starting around 12 weeks. The doctor confirmed that's what I was feeling. But it gets a lot more prominent later. & by the end you feel like baby is trying to beat her way out. Looks like it, too.

52. Your baby's heartbeat is a wonderful sound.

53. Dreams gradually get weirder, more intense, & much more memorable.

54. You wake up a bajillion times a night to pee in your first trimester. & then it gets even worse when you get big. & you need an extra push to get out of bed because of that big belly. Kinda humiliating.

55. If you're like me, you'll discover the ability to get ready in 30 minutes or less (including feeding & taking out the dog) just so you can get some extra sleep.

56. Your midsection gets tender when the uterus moves up & forces things to move around.

57. Things you loved to eat, even a week ago, may make you want to throw up now.

58. Again... mood swings are intense. & the crying. My oh my.

59. Take advantage of your first pregnancy. The next time you do it you'll have another child to take care of & won't get this beautiful chance to be lazy again.

60. Before 28 weeks, don't be concerned if you don't feel your baby every day. I went weeks feeling her every day, & then would go days not feeling anything. Totally normal. But at 28 weeks you're supposed to start feeling them every day. You're going to freak out regardless, but try to tell yourself it's normal.

61. Keep a copy of "What to Expect When You're Expeting" (the book, not the movie) around for when you have questions or weird symptoms. It's a really good source.

62. According to the above mentioned book, you can have 200mg of caffeine a day. Soda has about 35mg in a can. A lot of people say you can't have it at all. It's just that you shouldn't over do it. Overdoing anything is never a good thing anyway.

63. Melatonin is safe to take when you're pregnant. My brain doesn't make enough so I had to take supplements before I got pregnant. A lot of books & things say that you shouldn't take supplements, but my OB, & like three others, said that Melatonin is perfectly safe. I take 5mg & it really helps. I mean, I still wake up, but I'm dead to the world for at least 4 hours straight before I start waking up every hour.

64. Smells that make you nauseous during pregnancy may make you nauseous for the rest of your life. Or things that made you throw up.

65. Some women don't start showing until 5 months or so during their first pregnancy. I just ended my 4th month & I'm just starting to look pregnant enough for people to be able to tell. But barely. It's completely dependent on your shape... & if you're a girl that let's it go & pushes it out or not. Again, everyone's different!

66. They say the second trimester is the best. That was true for me, but it's not because my morning sickness went away. In fact, my morning sickness was worse, but I had WAY more energy & I was WAY more peppy about throwing up.

67. A little bit of spotting isn't necessarily a bad thing. Don't freak out. (You're going to anyway...but try not to.) Especially if it's not a lot. The cervix becomes a hot spot for vascular things & may cause spotting on occasion. But don't hesitate to call your doctor! They're there to help.

68. If your doctor tells you to do something, do it. If they say stay out of the heat, don't spend the next day outside. It's a bad idea. I mean, it won't necessarily turn out as dramatic as my story, but it could be worse... you never know! So just follow doctor's advice on those kinds of things.

69. Heat bad. AC good. That's all I've gotta say about that.

70. Stay hydrated. I've never been so thirsty in my life. I drink like 10 full water bottles a day these days. Which I think may be why I'm gaining weight so slowly. I drink so much that I eat less when it's meal time. Plus, you don't want to become dehydrated. Your body may do that to you anyway if you can't keep anything down. So. Try to stay as hydrated as possible. Plus, if you have to get an IV or blood taken, it makes your veins bigger & easier to stick. I would know.

71. The ultrasound where you find out the gender is nerve racking. At least it was for me. Especially since they told me what I wanted to hear but I didn't believe her. We made her check several times.  I still had doubts up until she was born.

72. Pregnancy really does mess with you in every way humanly possible. Leg cramps. I don't know if you ever experienced growing pains, as a child, but it's like that. But worse. Husband has to rub my legs at bed time all the time because they hurt so bad I can't stand it. There are some stretches you can do to help, but it's so much easier to have someone else help so you can try to relax.

73. Braxton Hicks contractions can happen at any time. I felt it for the first time at 19 weeks. People say they don't hurt, but they can be pretty uncomfortable.

74. STAY HYDRATED. I know I said this before. But I'm so completely serious, it will save you so much pain. When my mom was in hospital while visiting me, I drank very little water one day & ended up in the maternity centre triage being monitored for an hour for contractions. While I did find out that my child was astoundingly healthy, I also found out that I was dangerously dehydrated. I try to be good, but sometimes you get distracted. They gave me one of the big jugs with the straw while I was there, & I kept that filled all the time. I drink SO MUCH MORE when I have a straw than I would otherwise.

75. Give in to cravings. Don't go crazy, but there's nothing wrong with eating some ice cream. Especially if you're on track with weight gain. I was being really really careful my first trimester. I didn't give in to anything. But then my doctor told me to or else I might go crazy & gain a ton of weight after I have the baby. So now I give in occasionally. We always have cookies or ice cream in the house. I don't crave unhealthy things everyday so it's not like it's hard to resist.

76. Make sure you eat healthy things as well. At some point, I can't remember when, during pregnancy, the baby starts to be able to taste what you eat. I've read that if you eat vegetables & things the baby will be more likely to like them. I don't know if it's true or not, but it can't hurt to try. Plus, veggies are good for you. & fruit is DELICIOUS.

77. Unless your doctor says you're gaining too much or too little, there's no reason to freak out about weight gain. You're going to think about it anyway cause when you look at the scale you'll think about how you'll have to lose all that after the baby is born. It can be discouraging. I weigh more than I ever have & it makes me feel awful. I feel so big. I weigh as much as husband, if not a little more. (Luckily I don't look like I weigh as much as I do.) It's weird. I don't like it. But I know I can lose it all after I have the baby. You should gain about a pound a week starting in the 2nd trimester apparently. But it's okay to gain more or less than that. Some appointments I go in & found out I've lost 3lbs...or gained 3lbs. But I'm still on track for a perfect weight gain so I'm not concerned.

78. Seeing your belly move the first time is freaky. I'm not going to lie to you, it still weirds me out a little bit. But it's SO COOL! Actually, I'm not really sure there's a human in my belly right now. I don't know what the heck she's doing in there, but she shakes or something. It feels like a rattlesnake, or a cell phone set to vibrate. It feels weird. But I love love love feeling her move in there.

79. When baby gets bigger, movements can be painful. I felt like she got stuck in a "corner" a lot (yes, I know my uterus does not have corners). She could simultaneously jab me in the ribs & cervix at the same time. & lucky for me she never dropped so that never went away.

80. People told me that I'd have a relief from the constant need to urinate in my second trimester. I still peed all the time, so that was crap. But once I hit my 3rd trimester it's like BAM! Every 10 minutes sometimes. & (sorry if this is TMI, but whatever...) sometimes you can't get all of it out. I have gone pee, then been washing my hands & had to go again. It's ridiculous.

81. If you feel light headed, lay down with your feet up. Preferably in a location that is over your head. This also helps to make swelling in your feet go down.

82. Swelling. My fingers look like sausages. & if my legs are hanging (like if I'm sitting on the counter), my feet turn bright red within minutes. You can feel it. It's all tingly & weird. Not at all pleasant. & swelling can happen anywhere. Even my nose is bigger. My mom had the same issue when she was pregnant. I didn't realize it until I saw a straight on picture of my face at my baby shower. I was like "WHAT HAPPENED TO MY FACE?!?" Not only was that a really puffy day for me, but my nose looked huge. I have days where I'm not quite as puffy as others, but I'm always puffier than I would be if I weren't pregnant. Drinking lots of water helps. (Another good reason to stay hydrated.)

83. Picking a name is a pain in the butt. It's not easy at all. All the names you once loved may no longer seem good enough. Good thing pregnancy is 40 weeks. Gives you plenty of time to figure it out. We decided not to pick until we had her. Then it took us another 12 hours even though we had a list of names we liked.

84. Most girls have insecurities, but during pregnancy they're magnified by like a billion. Suddenly going out without make up on & in some sweat pants sounds like the best idea, & then some skinny gorgeous girl walks by & you feel so awful about yourself you want to cry. It's even worse if you're with your husband, who is all put together, & this girl makes eyes at your husband. All I wanted to do was sit on that skinny skank. =]

85. Raging hormones are real. I have been so emotional lately, it's ridiculous. I cry about everything. & I want to yell at people for everything. I wanted to yell at the ticket agent at the airport the other day two kiosks down because she was being mean to her customer. It wasn't even me. But I wanted to put her in her place. Had I not been in pain at the time, I would have. Or, husband made a joke that normally wouldn't bother me, but I immediately started crying. My mom said she was going to deflate the air mattress so that I didn't have to, & I started crying. Anya was doing really well in puppy school the other day, & Gabe was being so sweet, & I teared up. Pathetic. hahaha

86. Registering for gifts is hard. It took me weeks to figure things out. Do I have any baby experience? No. But suddenly I have to decide on all of these baby products. It's incredibly overwhelming. Have some friends with young kids recommend things to you. Especially if they've had a baby in the last year or two. Products & technology change really fast, so it's nice to have a view from someone that's been through it recently.

87. Consignment sales are overwhelming as crap. But they're good. Watch out for any kind of sales. Heck. We got our pack'n'play from Target for 30% off. That was sweet. But consignment sales can have some really good finds. But definitely overwhelming. All these moms battling for the same thing. It's madness. That's why I bring husband with me. That & so when I bend down to get something on a low rack, he can help me stand back up.

88. Get a pedicure. No one deserves pedicures more than pregnant women. One, it's hard to reach your toes by yourself. & two, They rub your feet & the lower half of your leg. It's the best.

89. A good night's sleep is pretty much impossible. I have a horrendous time sleeping. From horrible, vivid dreams, to leg cramps, baby kicking me awake, having to pee 30 billion times...it's tough. & now my hips are spreading even more. Last night sleeping on my sides hurt my hips really bad, & when I layed on my back she woke up & decided it was time for a fiesta. I just couldn't win. Get a body pillow to try to help make you comfortable. I love my pregnancy pillow. It forms to me really well.

90. Keep a fan in your room so you don't have to run up the electric bill too bad by running the ac lower when you're sweating like a beast.

91. I hit a point where I wasn't throwing up any more, but not for lack of trying. I wanted to so bad. So I just spent my days curled up in a ball til it went away.

92. You will discover the difference between morning sickness & heart burn. It's not hard to tell. At least for me. I've only had heart burn once, so I'm not a good source for advice on that.

93. Your innards have to adjust as baby grows. Sometimes the nausea I feel is actually just because she's in a location that's messing with my stomach. I know because the zofran doesn't touch it, & then when I feel her move away from that spot, the nausea eases. But a lot of pains you feel are because things are adjusting in there. From round ligament pain, to nausea. It happens.

94. Read pregnancy forums. Not because they're useful tools for information (that's what books & doctors are for), but because it's so fun to read some of the complaints & rants from people. Very entertaining. & plus it's nice to know other people that are as far along as you are have the same kind of complaints. Makes you feel less crazy.

96. Not everyone experiences being clumsy. Pregnancy brain, absolutely. But I never found myself more off balance than usual. Maybe it's because I'm so skilled.

97. You may experience flu like symptoms in the time leading up to labor. Extra nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Good times. Just kidding! Super unpleasant. But it's no indication of when baby will come. I had friends that had it the day they went in, but mine started almost 2 weeks before I went in to labor.

98. Traveling is really hard on your body. I had issues every time. The 8 hour drive to Virginia at 31 weeks ended with me in the hospital with a UTI (which when you're pregnant apparently can cause horrible contractions). When I flew to Colorado at 33 weeks, then drove down to Arizona at 34 for my sister's wedding, I ended up in the hospital again for actual pre term labor. Scary. Just make sure you take it easy if you travel.

99. The last 5 weeks are the absolute longest. The seem to take forever. Especially if the pre term labor you had at 34 weeks triggers real contractions for the rest of your pregnancy. & contractions are exhausting so that's no fun.

100. If you're one that handles pregnancy like a champ, congratulations (but fyi, I don't believe you, you must be on something or lying). I'm not. I wish I was, but it's hard. I can tolerate a lot, & I've been through much worse than what I've experienced thus far, but I'm not going to lie to you, it's a pain in the butt & it doesn't make it any easier. It's a prolonged feeling of not feeling in control of your own body. But remember that the Lord blessed you with this amazing miracle of creating life in your belly. It seems like forever, but I know there's an end. & a beautiful baby to come.

The end.

One Month.

Peyton's blessing day
December 23, 2012
Peyton was a month old on Christmas day. I can't believe she's already a month old. While I'm so overly tired that it feels like it's been forever, it still somehow feels like the last month went by really fast. It's weird & difficult to explain. Not important. What's important is that Peyton is a month old. & before I forget, I want to share what has been the biggest help to us with a crying baby. WHITE NOISE. Read (or watch, because there's a dvd), Happiest Baby on the Block. It works. Gabe is the master of the 5 S's. & I even downloaded a white noise app in my phone (tv static works even better). I stick it in her car seat when she's upset, or when we're out & she starts to wake up, & BOOM, happy baby. Or at least a baby in a daze, which is fine by me! Invest. It will save your life. I'm incredibly thankful to the women at church that introduced me to it. Life saver. MOVING ON!

4 weeks old.
Peyton lost 7% of her birthweight before we left the hospital. 10% is the max of what's acceptable. Since she was so close, I had to take her in the Friday after she was born (she was born on Sunday November 25th) to have her weighed. She was at 5 lbs 14 oz. She started at 6 lbs 10 oz. That's 12% which is clearly more than 10%. A lot of people have told me that's normal & not to worry about it. Yes, weight loss is totally normal. But her weight loss was due to the fact that she wouldn't eat. She wouldn't even take a bottle. She was too lazy to suck. My baby was starving & wasting away to nothing. Three doctors came to check out an abnormality at the base of her spine (which seems to be nothing), & two of them said I definitely needed to go up to the lactation specialist. So I did. It took an hour, but was completely worth it. She had me pump, which was nice because I was severely engorged since my milk had come in 2 days earlier & Peyton wasn't eating. I don't know if you've ever been engorged for 2 days, but my boobs were about 3 sizes bigger than any other day, were very red, had lots of lumps, & it hurt to just brush against something. (Seriously, if your baby won't nurse, invest in a breast pump asap. So wonderful.) Anyway. She had me pump so that we could run a small catheter into her mouth while she was latched on to me & use a syringe to slowly push some of the milk in to her mouth to convince her to suck. It worked!! I had to do that a few more times over the next 24 hours, but after that she had it down perfectly. Thank goodness!

Baby Burrito.
4 days old.

After that appointment, I got a call from the awful first year resident that Peyton's appointment was with that day that said the lactation specialist was really worried about Peyton (which she wasn't), & we needed to bring her in the next day, Saturday, for another weight check. That time she weighed 5 lbs 15 oz! She gained an oz over night!!! It was great. I had another appointment the following Monday, & she was at 6 lbs exactly! At her 2 week well-baby check up that Friday she weighed 6 lbs 1 oz. She was gaining slowly but surely. At that point, we had picked a good doctor, the chief resident, & we really like him. He wanted me to supplement with formula. I decided against it & waited to see what she weighed at her next appointment on the 18th. She was at 6 lbs 6 oz. Just 4 oz short of her birth weight at 3 weeks. The doctor I saw that day was not our regular doctor & I had a really hard time with her. Her tech recorded the weight down wrong. Apparently they had her at just over 7 lbs, but I had seen the scale & it was definitely 6 lbs 6 oz. She tried to convince me that the grams were what mattered & that according to the grams she was over her birthweight. That somehow the grams to pounds & ounces didn't matter. Uh. What? No. She was wrong. Horribly wrong. Anyway. Since she wasn't back at her birthweight at what she was calling a month old, she wanted me to supplement with formula. They wanted her back at her birthweight by one month. Which meant she had a whole week to get that last 4 ounces, but the doctor wasn't realizing that. I told her I didn't want to supplement because the whole reason Peyton lost all the weight in the first place was that she was too lazy to suck. So why on earth would I give her a bottle 4 times a day? That's way easier than a boob. Why would I give her that option? So I went against her advice, which is fine by me, & my regular doctor, because she was not smart. That's putting it nicely. I shouldn't have to argue with a doctor about whether or not grams converted to pounds & ounces would be the same thing. We went back to the doctor yesterday for another weight check & Peyton is at 6 lbs 14 oz! She is 4 oz over her birthweight!!! Now, this is in the zero percentile, but she's gaining weight!!! She also grew an inch. The doctor was pretty happy with it. She's just small. He wants her between the 5th-10th percentile by her two month well baby check up.
Bored while shopping.
11 days old.

Long story short, she's definitely still in newborn clothes, & she's now starting to fit in to them. Peyton makes lots of sounds, but luckily she's a very quiet sleeper. Makes my life easier cause that means she can sleep in our room in her pack 'n' play until she sleeps longer than a couple of hours at a time.

As for me, I'm doing alright. Super sleep deprived of course, but that's to be expected. I'm incredibly grateful my mom was here the first few weeks. I was able to hand Peyton off & get a few extra minutes of sleep every once in a while. Plus I didn't have to worry about Anya, food, or laundry. I'm dreading Gabe going back to work next week. I think I'm going to fall apart. I mean, I'll be able to handle it, but I'll probably have a mental breakdown at the end of each day. Ha! At least I'll wait until the end of the day to freak out! Gotta make sure Gabe is here to take care of the baby while I'm freaking out. I already have to do laundry almost every day just to keep up. Between Gabe's & my laundry & the baby's, it's a lot. I only have so much in the newborn size & since she has this new thing where she likes to spit up all over herself, I have to was stuff a lot. Lucky she's so flipping cute. Parenting is hard & she's only a newborn. Plus, when she's up, one of us have to be there of course. We have to moogie her, & rock her, & keep her entertained (which, she has the cutest little grin, I can't wait until she does it long enough to get a picture. When she's asleep, I either sleep, or I sit there relaxing, which means I get zero done. She's asleep right now. I should be sleeping. I'm totally exhausted. I'll regret this at 3am when she wakes up to eat.

Peyton & her daddy on Christmas Eve

I've already lost all of my baby weight. I gained 25 lbs in total. I lost 16 lbs within the first 5 days, & I'm now back down to where I was. It's nice to know that. But then I look in the mirror & I see this flab of skin & my tiger stripes & it's a horrible reminder that my body will never be the same. I even have hips!!! It's so crazy. I have a lady shape. Peyton is definitely worth it. She's a cutie & I love her.

Anya has come to terms with the fact that Peyton isn't going anywhere. Poor thing is depressed now that my parents are gone though. She gets significantly less attention than she used to. But I've been trying to get her to come lay next to me while I breast feed, so hopefully soon she'll go back to normal.

This past Sunday, the 23rd, was Peyton's baby blessing. It was beautiful. I cried a little bit. She wore a beautiful blessing dress made by Gabe's mom. I absolutely love it. Of course, when Lori got here she had to add ribbon so we could tie the dress back. It still drowned Peyton a little bit, but it was so adorable it didn't even matter.

Peyton & Grandpa (my dad).
Anyway. Peyton is asleep so I'm going to take advantage of this time & get myself some ice cream (which makes no sense because it's below freezing & we have a few inches of snow on the ground...but whatever). Holding her & scooping ice cream is not easy. I can do it, but I much prefer to eat my ice cream when she's asleep. I can't stop using my moby wrap around the house until she's a bit bigger. According to the directions it's not safe for little runts like Peyton.

I probably won't post again before the new year, so...

Happy Christmas! & Happy New Year!

Now I need some ice cream.

That is all.
